Systems of legitimacy

Hello,

I want to share a brief reflection that continues to shape how I look at contemporary art today.

Contemporary art does not simply reflect identity, it constructs it. It shapes how meaning, culture, and visibility are formed across global systems.

But one question keeps returning:

Who decides what matters in contemporary art and why?

For decades, visibility in art has been shaped through institutions, curators, collectors, and cultural frameworks that define what becomes recognized and preserved.

Yet these systems are not neutral they actively construct artistic value.

Even today, as art becomes more global, the structures behind visibility remain deeply present. What is seen, collected, and remembered is still filtered through layers of selection, interpretation, and power.

So perhaps the deeper question is this:

If contemporary art shapes cultural memory and global identity, who ultimately determines which voices are seen, valued, and remembered?

I explore this reflection further in a short piece on LinkedIn.

I would be interested to hear your perspective.

Join Our Open Artist Call

The open call is part of a curated virtual exhibition titled “Claiming Identity: Beyond Representation,” which brings together a focused selection of artists whose practices engage critically with questions of identity, authorship, and contemporary presence.

Submissions are reviewed through a curatorial selection process, with particular attention to conceptual clarity, artistic depth, and the relevance of each work within the broader dialogue of the exhibition.
